Developed for Duc Phong, a bamboo enterprise in Vietnam, as part of the UNIDO-SPIN programme, this lighting collection takes its cue from the traditional Vietnamese bird cage. Rather than reproducing the object, we were interested in understanding its construction, proportions, and rhythm, and translating these qualities into a contemporary collection of lights.
The defining feature of the collection is the subtle skewing of the horizontal bamboo rings that hold the vertical members together. This simple intervention transforms a familiar vernacular form into one that feels sculptural, contemporary, and entirely new, while remaining true to the logic of its making.
The collection is handcrafted from minimally processed bamboo, finished with water-based, non-toxic colours, and incorporates bamboo that would otherwise have been discarded during production. It reflects Rhizome's belief that innovation often begins by looking more closely at existing materials, skills, and traditions, and asking what else they might become.
