SUSTAINABILITY FRAMEWORK

Created by our Founder Rebecca Reubens during her doctoral research at Delft University of Technology, the Rhizome Approach is our philosophical backbone. It envisions interconnected systems spanning social, cultural, ecological, and economic dimensions, yet capable of independent function. At Rhizome, sustainability is structural, rigorous, and deliberate—never rhetorical. Every decision embodies our core values: mindful materials, ethical processes, and responsible systems.

  • MATERIAL CONSIDERATIONS

Material selection has traditionally focused on function, durability, feasibility, cost, and other practical considerations. The Sustainability Checklist extends this thinking, embedding sustainability into every decision.

  • PRODUCTION CONSIDERATIONS

Production decisions have typically centred on form, material constraints, and the production-volume requirement. The Sustainability Checklist builds on this by proposing supplementary parameters towards sustainability.

  • DISTRIBUTION CONSIDERATIONS

Distribution decisions, including packaging, warehousing, promotion, and distribution systems, play a significant role in sustainability. The Sustainability Checklist extends this thinking by proposing additional sustainability-focused parameters.

  • CONSUMER USE CONSIDERATIONS

Considerations around maintenance, reliability, safety, and ease of use play an important role in consumer sustainability. The Sustainability Checklist extends this thinking by proposing additional parameters towards sustainability.

  • END-OF-LIFE HANDLING CONSIDERATIONS

End-of-life handling is frequently an afterthought. The Sustainability Checklist expands the conversation, adding supplementary parameters that strengthen sustainability outcomes.
