MATERIAL PALETTE

  • TERRACOTTA

Rhizome has a long-standing relationship with terracotta, a material we explored extensively in one of our projects we did for Wood at Sasan. By pushing the material’s limit and designing a table that was impossible to throw on a potter's wheel, we ended up creating two large hemispheres which were hand-formed in terracotta and joined using a mechanical detail.

Terracotta is one of the earliest materials used by humans in the Indian subcontinent, with a history that dates back to the Indus Valley Civilization. It is one of the oldest materials that was used by humans for artistic expression and archaeological findings from sites like Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa include terracotta figurines, showcasing the material’s durability.

For centuries, terracotta has been the material of choice for rural communities across India, used to create everything from everyday household items to idols and objects used in religious ceremonies. At Rhizome, we sought to elevate this traditional craft to a level that resonates with contemporary, modern households, bridging the gap between ancient art and modern design.

This material takes the form very easily but is as difficult to mould in the way one envisions. Working with terracotta has been challenging and time-consuming for us involving countless trials to achieve the envisioned results.

Another aspect that drew us to terracotta is its sustainability. By sourcing terracotta locally, we significantly reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation. Moreover, terracotta is fully biodegradable; when its life cycle ends, it breaks down naturally, returning to the earth without leaving harmful residues.

Terracotta also interests us because of its thermal properties. It naturally insulates and regulates temperature, which can contribute to energy efficiency in buildings.

The process of making terracotta products does not require us to add synthetic additives and helps us create non-toxic products. This aligns with our ethos of creating designs that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also sustainable and responsible.
