These works begin with a simple provocation: what if surrealism is not exclusively a Western idea? Surrealism rejected reason in favour of the irrational, the fantastical and the unconscious. Yet in India, gods with multiple heads, animals that speak, objects that transform and worlds that exist beyond logic have always been part of everyday life. Myth has never needed permission from reason.
To call this surreal is, in itself, to impose a Western lens on something that predates it. This collection reverses that gaze. Rather than reading Indian myth through surrealism, it asks us to encounter the surreal through an Indian imagination.
Each work takes something familiar from our mythological landscape and makes it strange again. The intention is not nostalgia, but disruption: to look again at what we have inherited, and recognise its continuing capacity to unsettle, fascinate and hold meaning.
