MATERIAL PALETTE

  • RECLAIMED TEAK WOOD

At Rhizome, we always look at reclaiming or upcycling before recycling. Recycling calls for breaking down the material and reconstituting it into a new material, which may or may not have the same characteristics as the mother material. Reclaiming is when the original material is not reconstituted - it is just used in a different application, extending the material’s life. Reclaiming is more sustainable than recycling, because no energy is spent in recycling the original material into a new material, nor are there any emissions that this process would have caused.

We use reclaimed Valsad and Burma teak that comes from demolished traditional Pol houses in Gujarat. Our wood is purchased from already torn-down houses. We do not support destroying heritage buildings, and do not commission it, though we do understand that there are many nuances to redevelopment. By using teakwood from old constructions or furniture, we avoid the environmental costs associated with logging and processing new teak. This helps conserve forests and reduces deforestation.

Because our wood comes from old architecture, it is already seasoned. It also has beautiful grains, because it is from old stock and carefully selected. This is why our products are treated and finished with the bare minimum. We use monocoat and oil finishes as far as possible, because these are kinder to the environment.
