CHINDI ROPES
Chindi ropes are made from recycled fabric scraps that originate from leftover textiles in the textile industry. The term ‘Chindi’ comes from the Hindi word for ‘scrap’ or ‘torn cloth’. These scraps are collected, twisted, or braided together to create durable and colourful ropes.
We’ve been incorporating Chindi ropes into our designs since the early 2000s, after discovering them in a local market. We were immediately captivated by their brilliant colours, their distinctly Indian essence, and the fact that they are made from recycled textile scraps.
How can we not love Chindi ropes which are an upcycled by-product of waste fabric scraps? By weaving our bamboo chairs with this rope, we not only extend the waste fabric’s lifecycle but also give it a meaningful second life.
The textile industry generates a significant amount of waste, and Chindi ropes help mitigate this by repurposing scraps that would have otherwise landed in landfills. This approach supports waste reduction efforts on a larger scale.
The production of Chindi ropes involves zero additional raw material and minimal energy consumption compared to producing new textiles. Since they are made from pre-existing scraps, there’s no need for additional dyeing or processing, which can be harmful to the environment.
The entire process of sorting, twisting, and braiding these fabric scraps is done by humans, providing employment to many people and adding value to what might otherwise have been discarded. In this way, Chindi ropes also support livelihoods, making them a material we love and are proud to use.
The twisting and braiding of fabric increases the durability and strength of the fabric while also increasing its lifespan. This way, we do not compromise on the quality of our products while also being kind to our future generations and our planet.
